After three years, I am excited to announce that Canadian sisterly duo Tegan and Sara are back with another album Love You to Death, to be released June 3rd!
Many longtime fans of the Quinn’s music were not excited when they dropped their raw vocals and coffee-shop indie emo acoustic roots in exchange for smooth and polished synthpop, but I personally liked Heartthrob and thought the twins were able to carry their indie sound into the mainstream without sounding too cheesy or commercial. What I liked about Heartthrob was that it was sometimes dreamy, and other times upbeat, sometimes vulnerable, and at times even counseling. They cast themselves as “hopeless romantics” and “underdogs” quite often in the past, and Heartthrob showed a different side to them never shown before.
Only time will tell what Love You to Death will sound like, but based off of their two singles, they are maintaining a new wave aesthetic. I am liking the songs more each time I listen to them! They brought back producer Greg Kurstin who also worked on Heartthrob and used longtime visual director for their cover art, Emy Storey.
